What Does a 300 sq ft Kitchen Remodel Cost?

The figure below includes the parts of the job that do not shrink when the job does — the permit, the delivery, the crew's morning. That is why a smaller job costs more per sq ft than a bigger one.

Adjust for your state

Fixed costs of $1,400 are included in every figure on this page, so the per-square-foot price falls as the job gets bigger.

What the number is made of

Every figure on this page follows the same arithmetic: a fixed portion for permits, delivery and getting a crew to your address, plus a per-sq ft rate for material and labor. The fixed part is why the per-sq ft price on this page is not the same as on a larger job.

Cost breakdown for this size
ComponentLowHigh
Fixed costs (permits, delivery, setup)$1,400$1,400
Materials$16,830$26,010
Labor$20,570$31,790
Total$37,400$57,800

The same size, five different states

Material prices do not change at the state line. Labor does. These five states sit at different points of the federal wage distribution for this trade.

Same job, adjusted for state wages
StateLabor factorLowHigh
Oklahoma×0.79$32,977$50,965
Arizona×0.85$34,335$53,063
West Virginia×0.92$35,754$55,257
New Hampshire×1.08$38,963$60,216
Illinois×1.40$45,649$70,548

Only the labor line moves between states. That is a deliberate limitation, not an oversight: state-level material pricing is not something we have reliable data for, so we do not pretend to.

Is a high-end remodel worth it in a kitchen this large?

Only if the house supports it. A large kitchen with custom cabinetry can outrun the value of the house, and the return drops sharply above the neighbourhood median.

What drives cost at this size?

Layout changes and utilities. A big kitchen gives you room to move the sink, and moving the sink is where plumbing and electrical line items appear.

How many weeks should I budget?

Ten to sixteen weeks for high-end. Permit review and cabinet lead times dominate, not the construction itself.

Data note. Figures are computed from a fixed-cost-plus-rate model: $1,400 fixed, plus $120 to $188 per sq ft installed, with 55% of the variable portion treated as labor. Labor is adjusted with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS wage data by state. Material ranges come from published 2026 cost data. These are planning ranges, not quotes.
