What Does 400 sq ft of Flooring Cost?

The figure below includes the parts of the job that do not shrink when the job does — the permit, the delivery, the crew's morning. That is why a smaller job costs more per sq ft than a bigger one.

Adjust for your state

Fixed costs of $250 are included in every figure on this page, so the per-square-foot price falls as the job gets bigger.

What the number is made of

Every figure on this page follows the same arithmetic: a fixed portion for permits, delivery and getting a crew to your address, plus a per-sq ft rate for material and labor. The fixed part is why the per-sq ft price on this page is not the same as on a larger job.

Cost breakdown for this size
ComponentLowHigh
Fixed costs (permits, delivery, setup)$250$250
Materials$1,125$2,725
Labor$1,125$2,725
Total$2,250$5,450

The same size, five different states

Material prices do not change at the state line. Labor does. These five states sit at different points of the federal wage distribution for this trade.

Same job, adjusted for state wages
StateLabor factorLowHigh
Oklahoma×0.79$2,008$4,864
Arizona×0.85$2,082$5,044
West Virginia×0.92$2,160$5,232
New Hampshire×1.08$2,336$5,657
Illinois×1.40$2,701$6,543

Only the labor line moves between states. That is a deliberate limitation, not an oversight: state-level material pricing is not something we have reliable data for, so we do not pretend to.

Is it worth installing flooring in a room this small?

The material cost is low but the minimum job charge is not. At this size expect to pay the same setup cost as a room twice the size, which is why the per-square-foot number looks high.

What flooring suits a small room?

Something continuous. Fewer seams and no transitions make a small room read as bigger, and the installation is faster.

How much waste should I allow?

About 10% for a simple rectangle, more if the room has more than two doorways.

Data note. Figures are computed from a fixed-cost-plus-rate model: $250 fixed, plus $5 to $13 per sq ft installed, with 50% of the variable portion treated as labor. Labor is adjusted with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS wage data by state. Material ranges come from published 2026 cost data. These are planning ranges, not quotes.
