Cabinetry alone is larger than flooring and countertops together. That is why the single most consequential decision in a kitchen is not the countertop or the tile — it is whether the boxes stay.

Three scopes, three numbers

The trade-off is not gradual. Published scopes put a cosmetic refresh at $10,000 to $25,000, a mid-range remodel at $25,000 to $60,000, and a high-end one at $60,000 to $130,000.

The jump between the first two is almost entirely cabinetry. Keep the boxes and reface them and you stay in the first band. Replace them and you are in the second.

Where the money is not

Appliances are about 6% and lighting about 5%. Homeowners routinely spend weeks choosing both and minutes choosing cabinets.

That is the wrong allocation of attention relative to the money, and it is the most common pattern in kitchen projects.

Price a kitchen by scope

Frequently asked

Is refacing really cheaper than replacing?

Yes, typically by half or more, because the boxes and the layout stay. The saving is in labour and in not touching the plumbing or electrical.

Does a bigger kitchen always cost more?

Not as much as people expect. Scope moves the price more than size, because the expensive items are counted in units, not square feet.
